What does it mean to follow the children’s inquiry? A mini story from 3rd grade. It began with old glass bottles uncovered in the woods connected to the Larus estate. Who used them? What were they for? What can objects teach us about how people once lived? Third graders stepped into the role of archaeologists, made predictions based on close observation, and visited the Valentine Museum to build context. Their curiosity stretched toward Roman history and how civilizations are understood through artifacts. Glass opened a scientific path. Students learned that glass is made by melting quartz-rich sand and cooling it into a solid, but unlike crystals, its atoms are not arranged in a repeating, orderly pattern. To understand that difference, they studied salt crystals under microscopes and grew borax crystals, observing how crystals form from a supersaturated solution as it cools (and evaporates) over time. Each week, our fifth graders head to the Nest and the Rainbow Room to spend time with their preschool buddies. They read first, of course. They’ve learned to offer choices, to try a second book if the first one doesn’t land, and to sit near a familiar teacher if their buddy needs a little extra courage. “When we finish our book, then we’ll go play.” Outside, after reading, the connection continues in the Garden. Fifth graders have mastered the art of running very hard, but very slowly, so they can never quite catch a two-year-old. It may look like recess, but it’s not a break. It's leadership - requiring focus, patience, flexibility, and a surprising amount of stamina. The city of Richmond was honored to be a stop on the Walk for Peace this past week, and its presence has been felt deeply across our school. Earlier this month, teachers Amy and Jake brought in pictures of the Walk for Peace as a provocation. Without explanation, they invited their kindergarteners to observe closely and share what they noticed and wondered. The children were immediately drawn in and dove into the inquiry, even asking to write notes to their families to gather thoughts and perspectives to share with the group. The more the children learned, the more questions they had. They explored what peace looks and feels like, tracked the monks’ journey on a map, learned about monastic life and its beliefs and rules, and expressed their thinking through loose parts and artmaking. As their understanding grew, so did their sense that peace is something people choose and practice, including children, in the way they care for others and their community. Earlier this year, the preschoolers in the Hive expressed an interest in sewing. Teachers Audrey and Katie, alongside atelierista Paige, supported children as they built fine motor skills and confidence through individual sewing work. "Explo", short for Exploratory, is an independent study course all students in Grades 6–8 take each quarter. Earlier this month, students wrapped up their second round of Explo projects and presented their work to peers. With each cycle, we are seeing growing confidence alongside the development of crucial skills like planning, independence, grit, and bravery in presenting. Students choose their own topics and spend the quarter researching investigations that range from STEM and engineering to art, history, writing, film, games, and sports. These presentations offer a clear window into students’ thinking and growth. Older students approach the work with increasing ownership, while younger students are still learning how to shape big ideas and use time well, and seventh graders often sit in the productive space between exploration and mastery. “We can march like the monks to spread love to everyone!” 🧡 The preschoolers in the Forest Room have been drawing parallels between the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the monks they have been learning about, noticing how both bring awareness to peace, love, kindness, and fairness through peaceful action. They followed the monks’ path on a map, read "Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King Jr.", and talked together about how individuals, including children, can share kindness and fairness through their own choices and actions. As a group, they decided to create signs and hats with images of peace and love, then spread their message as they marched around the playground. Seventh graders have been starting their Thursdays with a cozy advisory tradition: tea and hot cocoa. The simple ritual creates a calm tone for the day and a sense of connection in the room. Before break, they invited Head of School Emma Ferek to join them and surprised her with a science-inspired prank. As part of their Chemistry unit and reading of "The Disappearing Spoon" by Sam Kean, students had learned about Gallium, a nontoxic metal that melts at just 85°F. After serving Emma her tea, one student offered what he called an "antique heirloom spoon," secretly cast from Gallium. Earlier this year, 6th graders were studying "Phineas Gage: A Gruesome but True Story About Brain Science". Students explored how the nervous system works, what happens when it’s disrupted, and how the brain heals and adapts through neuroplasticity. Using their own handmade “brain hats” to map out brain regions and functions, students investigated neurons, mirror neurons, and the connections between movement, mindfulness, and brain activity. In Paula and Annaleigh’s second grade class, a study of birds sparked new questions about design, behavior, and environment. After noticing the many birds around campus - and even spotting a possible bald eagle - students wondered how they might attract more birds to visit. Drawing on their observations and what they’ve learned about how birds eat, perch, and stay safe from predators, students began designing bird feeders. Fourth graders have been exploring geometry through a simple but powerful question: Why do shapes tile? Beginning with open exploration, students experimented with pattern blocks and noticed ideas about symmetry, angles, and fit. Through challenges and discussion, they discovered that both the side lengths and the angle measures determine whether a shape can tile. As they tested theories, they began identifying and comparing angles, using right angles as a reference to recognize 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90° angles. Their investigations led to moments of clarity: "4x90 = 360," one student noted, while another added, "If you do a 360, you end up where you started." In our preschool classrooms, literacy often begins in the most natural of ways. Hive teachers Katie and Audrey share a recent experience that demonstrates how language and writing develop organically when children are motivated by real problems to solve and stories to tell. "One day after rest, Henry found some connector toys stuck behind the mirror on the wall. He used several different tools to try to free the connectors, but with no luck. Word got around and soon Henry, Mireia, and Lydia were very invested in getting to a solution. Henry suggested that we write a letter to Pippin, our facilities caretaker, so that he could help us get them out. Henry, Mireia, and Lydia collaborated on figuring out what they wanted the note to say. Mireia helped sound out and spell the words while Henry and Lydia typed it out. Pretty soon they had an official looking letter, complete with Henry’s full name on 'letterhead' that read: 'To Pippin, There are connectors stuck behind the mirror! Please help us get them out we tried already !!!!!! !!!!!!!!' This was such a wonderful example of how literacy emerges organically in our classroom. For this age group, literacy grows out of real experiences that feel connected to their world. The connectors being stuck motivated them to communicate, collaborate, and find solutions together. They explored how writing can be used to make something happen. Each month, second graders take a trip to the Bon Air Library, a practice that nurtures independence and a love of reading. With their own library cards in hand, students learn to navigate the process of using a library - searching for books, locating them on the shelves, and deciding what they most want to read. Checking out a book of their own choice gives them a sense of responsibility and pride, building confidence and ownership over their choices as readers. It’s no wonder that time spent among books translates into deeper focus back in the classroom. Students in Hannah and Catherine's first grade class are doing 🎃 PUMPKIN MATH🎃 Hannah and Catherine write: It's pumpkin season, and we're learning different strategies to count and add! What better way to explore these strategies than by counting pumpkins seeds? Each group was given a pumpkin and asked to estimate how many seeds they thought were inside. Next, the groups were able to look inside the pumpkins and make a new estimate. Then, the groups scooped out all the seeds into containers and made a final estimate. Finally, they were able to start counting to find out how close their estimates were. This required a lot of teamwork, compromise, and trial-and-error to comes up with the best method of counting accurately. What did the class discover was the best method? Groups of ten! On October 23, the Sabot community gathered at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture to celebrate the installation of Emma Ferek as Sabot’s fifth Head of School. It was a meaningful evening that honored our past while looking ahead to the future under Emma’s leadership. The celebration brought together parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, and friends—people whose care and connection continue to shape the heart of our school. We were especially pleased to welcome VAIS President Betsy Johnson, Education Group Consultant Margaret Moore, several fellow VAIS Heads of School, and community partners from across the greater Richmond area. Guests explored an exhibition of student work that highlighted the depth of children’s inquiry and creativity, and contributed to a collaborative community art project that celebrated connection and care. In 8th grade Humanities, students are studying the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its lasting impact on people and places, both locally and globally. Beginning with photographs and maps of Richmond, they’ve been developing questions about how histories of slavery are remembered and represented in the landscape around us. Their research and fieldwork have taken them to the African Burial Ground in Shockoe Bottom, where they observed how this complex history is memorialized. Back in the classroom, they’re analyzing primary sources, reviewing their documentation, and shaping new questions that connect Richmond’s past to its present and future. This unit invites students to see history not as a set of facts to memorize, but as an inquiry into memory, place, and justice - work that continues to deepen with every question they ask. Each week, our youngest learners in the Nest build their strength and stamina by walking a little farther into the forest than the time before. Last week, their adventure led them past the big hill and deeper into the woods, guided by curiosity and the distant hum of a lawnmower they were determined to find. Along the way, they noticed trucks, gathered leaves and sticks, and even spotted the Sabot chickens roaming free. In our Horizons Program, 7th and 8th graders pursue Pre-Algebra, Algebra, or Geometry, approaching math in ways that go beyond the textbook. In Pre-Algebra, students are estimating, comparing, and ordering real numbers, then creating a human number line to place rational and irrational numbers. They are moving through stations to apply number sense in new contexts, with a quick outdoor brain break to connect ideas to the Pythagorean Theorem. In Algebra, students are simplifying and evaluating expressions and beginning to explore polynomials. A PEMDAS art project is bringing order of operations to life and reinforcing accuracy through creative design. In Geometry, students are wrapping up their first unit with compass-and-straightedge constructions, turning precision into intricate patterns. Next up: transformations. In the Burrow, our three-year-olds have been exploring clay in the studio with Atelierista Paige. The children experimented with pressing, rolling, and adding water, discovering for themselves how clay changes when it becomes “slippery” and “wet.” Clay invites both sensory play and deep concentration. There’s no better time to find mushrooms than after a good fall rain. Our budding third grade mycologists have been learning from Teacher-Researchers Patrick and Macee how to identify the many kinds of mushrooms that appear in Larus Park. The class has spotted mushrooms of all shapes and colors, including the bright orange jack o’ lanterns that grow beneath the trees. Patrick even cooked a chicken of the woods mushroom that Macee found, and almost everyone gave it a try. Spending time in nature is an essential part of The Sabot Approach. In the Hive, our youngest learners have discovered a special place in the forest they’ve named “Fire Rock.” The children have worked hard to make it their own, becoming stewards of the space. They’ve cleared an area for play and learning, using rakes to reveal the hidden layers of the forest floor. Time in nature is a cornerstone of a Sabot education. These experiences allow children to explore freely, care for the land, and see themselves as part of a larger community. Our brand new Design Lab is open! Outfitted with 3D printers, robotics kits, soldering tools, a laser cutter, Cricut, and more, it’s a space for hands-on exploration and creative problem solving. Seventh graders kicked things off during Design Lab Fridays in science class. Each student received a passport with challenges to learn safe tool use. Once they demonstrate safe and effective use, they earn a badge in their passport and teacher approval and are able to use those tools independently. The first challenge was to build the tallest tower possible using only cardboard and sharps in just 30 minutes, with no glue or tape. After round one, students weren’t satisfied and asked for another class period to refine their designs. Our 1st graders have been carefully studying their own reflections, using magnifying mirrors to notice small details as they draw self-portraits. They count teeth, analyze the shape of their eyes, and take time to wonder about what they see. At Sabot, observational drawing is not about being “good” or “bad” at art. It is a tool for learning. When children draw, they slow down, attend to details, and translate what they notice into a visual language that others can understand.
