POSITION DESCRIPTION

Sabot School, a progressive Preschool-Grade 8 school in Richmond, and a leader in the Reggio Emilia Approach®,  seeks a Kindergarten to Grade 3 Spanish Teacher to serve Kindergarten to Grade 3. The Kindergarten to Grade 3 Spanish Teacher will be responsible for the instructional program, general operations, and management of the Spanish Program in Kindergarten to Grade 3, in addition to their assigned classes. 


The Kindergarten to Grade 3 Spanish Teacher will create a learning environment of safety, kindness, trust, and risk-taking to build students’ confidence in the Spanish language. Instruction is delivered through an inquiry-based, social-constructivist, and Reggio Emilia Approach™. Sabot World Language Teachers partner with families and community members to expand students’ knowledge and awareness of a variety of Spanish-speaking cultures, building student collaboration through regular, authentic, and immersive opportunities to work together, practice listening and speaking Spanish together.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

  • Teaches Spanish to Kindergarten-Grade 3: Independently leads weekly Spanish classes for grades Kindergarten to Grade 3; class sizes ranging from 14 to 18 students, 6 sections total, bringing an introduction and exploration of the Spanish language to all the classrooms.
  • Performs Additional Duties: Completes other related tasks as assigned by the Program Director based on scheduling availability. 
  • Develops Spanish Curriculum: Regularly collaborates with the Grades 4-8 Spanish Teacher to ensure a comprehensive language program that builds students' skills over the years as they work towards mastery of the Spanish language; designs and implements curriculum and instruction consistent with the mission, values, and standards established by the School, employing a variety of teaching styles and learning opportunities;
  • Creates a Welcoming and Inclusive Classroom Environment: Establishes a space where all students feel safe to express themselves, take intellectual risks, and engage in collaborative problem-solving. Fosters critical thinking, empathy, and communication skills. Guides students’ processes of discovery and understanding, encouraging the development of meta-cognitive skills such as reflective thinking and problem-solving techniques;
  • Documents Student Learning: Develops provocations and questions to bring meaningful experiences with Spanish to all students and develop their Spanish language skills; uses Spanish to foster school school-wide community such as teaching and leading songs and at school-wide and program circles;  Guides students in discovery and understanding, fostering the development of reflective thinking and problem-solving skills. Tracks each student’s understanding of grade-level standards and key skills using a variety of methods, including formative and summative assessments, projects, collaborative work, classwork, stories, class discussions, one-on-one conferences, and self-reflection.  Completes required reports and tasks timely and professionally;
  • Participates in Non-Classroom Activities: Engages in school activities, including parent/student conferences, retreats, faculty meetings, field trips, special activities, performances, and admissions and enrollment events (some of which may occur on weekends).
  • Ensures Student Safety and Well-Being: Supervises students effectively to maintain a safe, healthy, and positive environment in accordance with school policies and expectations. Aids in supervision outside the classroom
  • Manages Classroom Expectations and Collaborates on Student Support: Works closely with Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade Teacher-Researchers to engage in reflection and planning to create cross-curricular connections; works with the Program Director and School Counselor to address student concerns and implement support plans as needed. Participates in the school’s restorative practices program. 
  • Communicates with Families: Builds trusting, respectful, and professional relationships with children and families; maintains open communication with families, providing regular updates on student progress and learning experiences.
  • Reflects on Teaching and Maintains Professional Development Goals: Participates in an annual observation cycle based and classroom action research based on personal research interests and school-wide goals. Attends related  internal and/or external professional development.
  • Collaboration with Colleagues: Supports staff to become more connected to their own language abilities and assist them in finding ways to incorporate Spanish in the classroom throughout each day; collaborates with colleagues on curriculum development and on enhancing instructional practices and strategies.

QUALIFICATIONS


Education & Experience

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in teaching or related field required. Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Experience: Should possess a minimum of three years of teaching experience.
