Summer Reading Requirements 2022

Sabot School was established by a group of parents seeking a progressive educational alternative for their preschool-age children, and remained parent-governed for some time. We work with parents to allow children to become life-long learners.

Dear families,

Summer is here! We hope your summer brings with it opportunities for relaxation and adventure, as well as ample time for reading. Reading during the summer helps maintain or even improve literacy skills that were built all year long. Plus, reading is a fun way to travel to far away lands, embark on countless adventures, and pursue interests.

We hope everyone in your family finds a book (or three!) that captivates, challenges, and inspires them. Consider setting aside time to read as a family. Maybe encourage your child to start a “book club” with their friends. Make trips to your local library or independent bookstore part of your summer routine!

Throughout the school year, Sabot students are encouraged to read books in a variety of genres that are representative of diverse identities and experiences, including people of different cultures and races, people from different countries and families, people in the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities and neurodivergence, and more. Because students in middle school are in different stages of maturity and intellectual development, development that occurs rapidly over the course of just a few short years, books that middle schoolers read also vary by reading level and complexity of content.

Research shows that self-selected reading is a powerful tool for developing motivation and comprehension. As your child considers books for summer reading, we encourage you to honor their interests and offer support if they choose a book with a higher reading level or complex content. Common Sense Media is an excellent resource for families to help them understand the nature of the content in the novels that their children are reading.

Students have helped to build a website with book recommendations organized by grade-level. The titles listed reflect the diversity of interests, opinions, identities, and experiences in our student body. Titles on the website that contain content appropriate for more mature readers are noted with an asterisk (*).

Wishing you an enjoyable summer with generous time to meander through some great books.
