Story Example

Notice the blend of exposition into the action,  and use of dialog to build suspense. This is a currently popular way to structure a story.  Bonus points if you can pick up on the symbol at this point in the story. The author is intentionally using one.

The Quest Maze

        “Crap,” Winston said.
Chapter Four
A clawer burst out of the fire and landed on the wall, and started climbing.  Rodrick steadied his bow. Zing- the arrow shot through the air.  The arrow punched through the robot’s gears; the clawer came to a halt.  “I guess my actions blew his brains,” Roderick said while laughing.  They all turned to see a Beetle blase fly through the window. The little mechaical ball jumped and popped in the air and hit the ground. The shock wave made Rodrick stumble backwards and fall out the door. He caught at the edge, almost falling into the fire. Winston  grabbed Rodrick’s arm.
“Winston, I have to tell you something,” Roderick yelled.
“I’m busy right now trying to save your life,”Winston replied.
“Ok, well, I’m trying to tell you something about your life.”
Chapter Five
Winston tried to get a better grip.  “What?” Winston said.  “Your brother is alive; Gally is alive.” Rodrick repeated.  Winston froze.
“You should at least try helping him up,” Rachel muttered with a hurt head.  Winston pulled Rodrick up. “Look out!” Roderick yelled while pushing Winston down.  A spear hits Roderick in the chest, making him fall out the door and into the fire. Winston turned around to see Rachel in a throwing stance.
“You son of a ****!,” Winston said. Winston grabbed Rachel’s hair and dug his knife into Rachel’s neck with blood spraying everywhere, as she dropped into the sink. Rachel and Roderick, both dead. Winston put his back to the wall, sliding down onto the floor. He curled into a ball and cried.
