It Begins With Curiosity – Reflection And The Investigative Process

Light –  a poem by Laila

The light is shining on our brightened faces, making slight changes.

It dances and glows like a diamond stream.

It pushes in every direction, trying to get out of the darkened wall it is held by.

It is like a sun without warmth, a bright patch of fresh fallen snow from the heavens, and the colors swirling around and around, making faces.

Only someone pure of heart shall notice the treasure of light.

What is  reflection?

  • Kate: It could be thinking about what you’ve done in the past year or it could be like looking in a mirror.
  • Julia: It’s not just looking back, but it’s looking at how you can do things in the future.
  • Eve:  To see how you could change.
  • Kate: You can look into a mirror and see where you are right now, and you can see behind you.

How are children and adults different when coming up with ideas, theories, and questions?

  • Shayna:  We have a better imagination.
  • Eve: We are able to be flexible and work with other people better.
  • Charlie: Adults over-think and kids don’t.
  • Caroline:  Even though we have smaller brains, we are very curious because we don’t know as many things as adults, and so we’re always asking questions.
  • Zoey: We are closer to the ground, so we can see things closer.
  • Kate:  Kids’ brains can move faster and sometimes your energy flows through better and makes your ideas go faster.
  • Penelope: Kids figure things out themselves instead of someone just telling them.
  • Sam: When you’re a kid, if you make a mistake, it’s not that big of a deal.
  • Annabel:  It’s a little weird if you don’t make mistakes!
  • Zoey: Sometimes when kids see something small, they think about it and make it into a bigger thing.

What is generating in your mind that you are testing out?

  • Avery:  Your thinking.
  • Zoey: An idea that you think might happen.  It’s kind of like a prediction.
  • Annabel:  You need data to make a theory.
  • Sam: If you’re making an educated guess, you’re going to need a hypothesis…a theory.

If you’re posing a question, you must be curious.  You’re curious because you’re trying to make sense of the world around you…

  • Annabel:  In all the steps you need to make a conclusion, the first thing you need is curiosity.  The reason you’re curious is because you’re looking for the conclusion…an answer.
  • Eve:  [Wonder] is when you’re interested in something and you’re really thinking about it.
  • Laila: You look around and feel with your senses to find something that inspires you.
  • Caroline:  It’s like your imagination or mind is exploding with ideas.  You’re on fire with questions.
  • Joe:  It’s kind of like you really want to know what you’re thinking or seeing.  It feels like you want to rush to it.
  • Zoey: Wonder is like a monster and it’s hungry for ideas.
  • Annabel: You’re hungry for answers.
  • Shayna:  Your need to know activates your body.

The reflection

Round and bright

And you look different than before

I guess some reflections give you a new perspective on the world.
