Substitute Teacher

Sabot School seeks dedicated, dynamic and experienced Substitute Teachers to oversee class instruction when a faculty member is absent. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in education with an ability to successfully work with the students and faculty to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment that reflects the mission, values and policies of Sabot.


Additionally, the Substitute Teacher must possess an enthusiastic commitment to the importance of building and sustaining a diverse, just, inclusive, and equitable environment.


General Summary: 

Under the supervision of the appropriate Program Director that they are directly working for, the Substitute Teacher is available on an as needed basis and is responsible for carrying out the lesson plans and duties of the teacher for whom they are substituting. As such, the Substitute Teacher works with the students and faculty to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment that reflects the mission, values and policies of Sabot School.


Substitute Teachers assume a variety of educational and support responsibilities. At Sabot, attention is given to individual learning styles, social-emotional skills, and positive identity development. Teachers model a patient, compassionate, open-minded approach to relating to children and adults. Substitute Teachers are called on to support the class culture with routines and expectations defined by Sabot’s mission and values.

Essential Duties:

  • Having a personal and professional understanding of and commitment to the School’s philosophy and educational approach;
  • Following the lesson plans left by the teacher for whom they are substituting;
  • Meeting and instructing assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated;
  • Maintaining a learning environment conducive to effective learning;
  • Taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, equipment and facilities;
  • Provide a positive and safe environment for students physically and emotionally that reflects effective classroom management strategies;
  • Maintaining a professional, positive and constructive relationship with colleagues, administrators and staff;
  • Actively participating in and supporting the behavioral guidelines of the School and carrying them out with respect for the integrity of each child;
  • Being ready to fill additional duties when asked (i.e., playground supervision, lunchroom supervision, etc.);
  • Maintaining communication with the administration and the Faculty regarding the class’s progress that day and any issues/concerns that may have arisen;
  • Develops and maintains professional, collaborative and collegial relationships with faculty and staff to the benefit of students and classes;
  • Provides effective supervision of students to promote a safe and healthy environment and School experience;
  • Supervises students outside of the classroom – for example, during lunch, recess or breaks;
  • Maintain a professional working atmosphere and confidentiality of information in relation to staff, children, families, and co-workers;
  • Helps to maintain School policies, protocols and expectations;
  • Exhibits a growth mindset and engagement in the learning process;
  • Reports to the Program Director at the beginning and end of each day;
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Program Director.


Education and Experience:

While a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in teaching, education or related field with teaching experience is highly preferred, we are open to other degrees with professional experience working with children in a safe, supportive learning environment. For all applicants, some experience with children in a professional setting is required.


Special Requirements:

Must be able to complete background checks, including fingerprinting.

  • A willingness to participate fully in a dynamic day school located in Richmond, Virginia;
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to remain responsible at all times for the supervision of students during classes and generally at all times when on campus or off campus;
  • Ability to use the school’s technology and systems;
  • Ability to demonstrate creativity, and flexibility in pedagogy;
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a role model of professionalism;
  • Ability to model honesty, accountability, understanding, tolerance, respect, love and kindness for the students;
  • Ability to multitask, keep calm under pressure and treat everyone with respect;
  • Displays curiosity, a positive attitude, flexibility and a good sense of humor;
  • Ability to follow all policies and procedures of the School as written in the employee and parent handbooks;
  • Demonstrate professionalism, engagement, and kindness to all children and families regardless of race, religion, nationality, abilities, familial status or make up, gender identity or gender expression.
