Sabot Afternoon Extended Day Teacher

Supervisor: Director of Enrichment
Status: Part-time Non-exempt (approximately 20 hours a week between 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.)

Start Date: IMMEDIATE

Mission Statement

Sabot School is a school designed to sustain children’s quest for meaning and understanding, harness the power of their theories and ideas, and guide their inquiry and research. In an environment that supports co-creation, collaboration and respectful exchange, we challenge our students to become effective communicators and disciplined thinkers, capable of solving problems in our increasingly complex world.

Summary

Collaborate with students, teachers and parents to create and sustain a lively after school environment for students. Support the implementation of an inquiry- based, social-constructivist, Reggio-inspired approach through age-appropriate activities. Ensure the health and safety of children.

Responsibilities

  • Constructivism. Recognize at every level there is an important dialectic between the individual and the group – the individual is responsible to the group and the group is responsible to the individual. Recognize students as independent learners, intrinsically motivated to generate, discover, build and enlarge their own frameworks of knowledge. Guide students’ processes of discovery and understanding, rather than simply transmitting knowledge to them. Encourage the development of meta-cognitive skills such as reflective thinking and problem solving techniques.
  • Differentiation. Recognize that students have various learning styles and types of intelligence. Employ a variety of teaching styles (visual, aural, tactile, kinesthetic, etc.) and provide a variety of learning opportunities (independent and group work, project-based learning, experiments and investigations, representations in various modes and media).
  • Communication with Parents. Maintain open and regular communication with parents. Effectively communicate with teachers and parents about student concerns and well-being.
  • Communication & Collaboration with Other Teachers. Teachers will share their work with other teachers, both informally and – occasionally – formally. This will help create a community of learners and teachers and will also facilitate both continuity and innovation across the grades and across the curriculum.
  • Communication and Connection with Children. Observe and listen to the intentions of the children in order to support learning in both individual and collaborative work.
  • Engage. Engage with the Sabot School faculty, in faculty development and community-wide events, to forward the work of the school. Engage with the larger field of progressive education to disseminate Sabot’s work and remain conversant in best practices.
  • Civility. In all of their exchanges, whether with students, parents or one another, teachers will maintain civility and communicate respect. Teachers will be especially mindful of the sensitivity of children as related to their development.
  • Diversity, Inclusivity, and Equity. Teachers will create and maintain a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment for all students and families regardless of race, sex, gender, nationality, or ability status.
  • Supervision/Safety. Ensure the physical and emotional health and safety of students both inside and outside the classroom by providing active and appropriate supervision and guidance.

Evaluation/Professional Growth

  • Collaboration with the Directors of Enrichment, Kindergarten to Grade 3 and Grades 4 – 8 along with the Extended Day Program Lead Teacher: Expect visits and support from these leaders in order to provide extended day teachers with immediate feedback, facilitate the sharing of ideas and the co-construction of curriculum, leading to an improvement of teaching practice.
  • Ongoing Professional Development and Additional Support: Teachers will participate in professional development sessions as determined in conjunction with Extended Day Program Lead Teacher.
  • Health Training: Teachers may be required to participate in courses in First Aid, CPR, and/or medical administration at the expense of the school and as requested by the Director of Operations. These training may occur outside of teachers’ regular schedule.
