Celebrating Anna Golden

After nearly 30 years, Anna Golden will leave Sabot School in March

Anna Golden, beloved art atelieriesta

As just announced to our school community, we share here the bittersweet news that after nearly 30 years at Sabot, Anna Golden has accepted a new position at The Cottage School, a Reggio-inspired preschool in Richmond.

It is not possible to overstate Anna's contributions to Sabot and we honor her lasting impact on generations of learners and on educators around the world. Her departure is a tremendous loss for our school and will surely be felt by all. In particular, we will miss her refined skills as an atelierista, her capacity to listen deeply to children, and her inspiring engagement with faculty across all grades. Most of all, her dedication to children and to the Reggio approach to education have been an integral part of the school's success.

After such a long time in one place, we acknowledge that, at any stage of a career, professional changes present exciting opportunities and we are happy that Anna has been offered this position. Of course, given The Cottage School is in Richmond, we look forward to opportunities to continue to collaborate with her and with her new colleagues.

Anna's last day at Sabot will be Friday, March 22. She leaves for Reggio Emilia, Italy, the following day and we hope she will present to us and to Sabot families some of her observations and reflections from that trip at a later date.

"My hope for Sabot is that it will continue to honor its founding teachers, especially Marty Gravett, by remembering their contributions as some of the few who had a vision to bring the Reggio philosophy to older children and their families.   Thank you all for your guidance and partnership. I’ve appreciated working with you."   - Anna Golden

Community members have been invited to write a letter or make a drawing for Anna; we honor her humble wish that there be no fanfare or community event to say farewell.

Also, we commend to you the recent article Anna has written, "The Atelier as a Listening Space: Perspectives from an International Collaboration of Atelieristas." In it, Anna illustrates with a remarkable conviction the idea that "artmaking is not just an aid to thinking but a way of thinking." The article also makes clear not only the value of a studio space as a place for collaboration, interdisciplinary connection, and deep relationship-building but also the immeasurable value atelieristas such as Anna have in Reggio-inspired schools.
